Adequate preparation for an employment interview is a step forward for making that interview successful. This is why most of the employment advisers keep on repeating that every candidate should prepare him or herself thoroughly before he or she enters the interview room. Besides, for the sake of a successful interview, here the word “prepare” should be treated in its broader meaning – taking a Mint capsule or applying some glossy lipstick may not be enough to feel well-prepared for the job interview.
Generally, in order to prepare for an employment interview, one is advised to learn more about the employer company, analyse job responsibilities and requirements, and get prepared for possible questions. These are essential components of preparing for your job interview. However, while learning how to behave and what to do, it is also useful to know what not to do during your employment interview. Common don’ts are under the scope of this article.
Mistake #1. Using your mobile phone during the interview.
One of the worst things you can do during your employment interview is to have your mobile phone turned on. Basically, it is ok when it rests calmly in your pocket, but in case of an incoming call or fancy SMS sound, you will be distracted and your interviewer will hardly treat such an interruption of the interview as being to your advantage.
Mistake #2. Showing no interest in the job you are applying for.
Even if you are applying for a part-time or seasonal job, you would do better by demonstrating your true interest in the job. Employers will hardly take you on board if you do everything to show them that your true aim is to work for a Google-level company and that this interview is for just a short-time adventure for you.
Mistake #3. Demonstrating arrogance.
Simply do not do this. If you display arrogance while talking to your job interviewer, it is almost 100% likely that you will fail the interview unless you are applying for an actor position in the theatre and demonstrating arrogance is your assignment to assess your performing skills.
Mistake #4. Speaking negatively about your previous employers.
Over time, the company you are currently applying to may turn from a “potential employer” into a “previous employer”. So, if you talk negatively about any of your previous employers, your present potential employer may take it too personally. So, it is better to stay positive or at least neutral in your statements about previous employers.
Mistake #5. Demonstrating skills and achievements irrelevant to the current job opening.
The primary function of employment interview is to assess the qualifications and skills of a particular candidate for a particular position. Here, “particular” is the keyword. You should do your best to single out and demonstrate only relevant achievements, skills, and experience, which will help you perform the duties as defined for the job you are applying for. Otherwise, it will be treated as a waste of time by the job interviewer.
Mistake #6. Do not cross the border.
Surely, you may be encouraged to talk about your family or hobbies during the job interview. However, try to do so in a reasonable manner. Do not go deep into personal details. Furthermore, asking your interviewer to give her (or his) phone number may also not work in your favour as regards employment.
Mistake #7. Being late for the interview.
Plan your time so that you can arrive at the location of your job interview 10-15 minutes early. Be punctual, as this will demonstrate that you are able to plan your activities. Besides, time management has always been in the list of abilities any employer would look for.
Generally speaking, avoiding the above mentioned mistakes can be useful not only for a successful employment interview, but for your daily life as well. After all, politeness, punctuality, self-control, and ability to express thoughts clearly – these are general human virtues, aren’t they?
