Types of a Job Interview



Educating yourself is an inevitable part of the successful employment in the modern highly competitive business environment. Whether you are applying for an entry-level role or for a managerial position, the more you know about the employment process the higher your chances to get the desired job are. Learning about the job interview as one of the integral parts of the employment process is one of the necessary steps to make on the stairway to the dream job.

Below we will make a short overview of the key basic facts about the types of job interview just to help you be prepared and choose the proper strategy of behavior to be successful at your job interview.

Behavioral Job Interview

Also known as the competency-based interview, behavioral interview is the most common type of the interview, used in modern workspace environment. The key target of this interview is to learn how the applicant managed certain situation in the past and based on this information decide whether he/she is suitable or not for fulfilling the job duties of the currently open position. The usual questions at the behavioral interview include the followings:

  • Describe the job you liked / disliked the most.
  • Please tell us about the situation where you had to work as a team leader. What did you do?
  • Please tell us about your experience of working in a team. What did you do?
  • Did you have an experience of making some unpopular decisions, which were necessary to achieve the goal? Give the example of a real life situation.
  • Did you have an experience when the changes, suggested by you, influenced the business environment you worked in? Give the example of a real life situation.
  • Did you have an experience of working with someone you did not like? What did you do in that situation?

Stress interview

As if there is not enough stress in our daily life, some employers still use stress interview to test the candidates. The basic idea of the stress interview is to check how a person can handle stress. Usually a stressful situation is created artificially, for example, a group of interviewers participates in a single interview; or an interviewer behaves in an unusual or even hostile manner, for example, avoids eye contact, interrupts, turns back during the interview, talks to someone else while a candidate answers the question, etc.

It is considered that the best way to behave during the stress interview is to depersonalize it. It is important to understand that the interviewer is playing a role to put you in a stressful situation. So, the best way is to take up your own part of the performance and show how you can manage stressful and pressing situations.

Technical interview

Technical interviews are usually conducted when it is necessary to evaluate the technical skills of the candidates. It is common to use computer-based tests for this type of job interview. The key goal of this interview is to demonstrate your specific technical skills as well as creativity and problem-solving abilities.

Phone Interview

This is a separate type of a job interview, which is sometimes conducted to screen the candidates before inviting them to the personal interview. It is also often used to interview the oversea applicants. Usually phone interviews are short, so an interviewee is required to give short and clear answers to the questions.

 

These are the basic four types of a job interview. An employer will usually choose in an unshared way what type of the interview to use for screening the candidates. That is why, it is important to understand the specificity of each interview type in order to response adequately to the questions during such employment meeting.
